Country rules

Austria

Austria is a high-value motorhome country, but toll class, Alpine roads, winter equipment and local camping law matter. The 3.5-tonne threshold changes motorway payment from vignette to GO toll.

AllowedCampsites and Alpine services

Campsites and Stellplaetze are the safest base for water, waste, electricity and legal overnight stays on Alpine routes.

Do not assumeCamping and overnight stays

Camping rules are not uniform across Austria, and forest camping is tightly restricted without the right permissions.

CheckCheck before entry

Motorways and expressways are tolled, with light motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes using a vignette and heavier motorhomes using distance-based GO toll. Austria's environmental-sticker requirements mainly affect vehicles registered in goods categories, while city parking and access limits still matter for motorhomes.

Country rules

Italy

Italy has clear national road-code rules for autocaravan parking, plus local ZTL, campsite and toll-road rules that matter in historic towns and coastal areas.

AllowedCampsites and aree di sosta

Use campsites or aree di sosta camper for overnight stays with services, especially near cities, lakes and beaches.

Do not assumeParking versus camping

Italian road rules distinguish permitted parking from camping: a parked autocaravan should rest only on its wheels, keep within its footprint and avoid discharging waste.

CheckCheck before entry

Italian motorway tolls are based on vehicle height at the front axle and axle count; many motorhomes fall into class B or higher. Historic centres often use ZTL access-control zones, and some regions also apply environmental traffic limits.

Austria's environmental-sticker requirements mainly affect vehicles registered in goods categories, while city parking and access limits still matter for motorhomes.

  • If the motorhome is registered as N1, N2 or N3, check whether an Umwelt-Pickerl or regional driving restriction applies.
  • Vienna and other cities add short-stay parking, height and access constraints that can be more practical than LEZ checks.

Historic centres often use ZTL access-control zones, and some regions also apply environmental traffic limits.

  • Do not enter a ZTL unless your accommodation, campsite shuttle or local permit explicitly covers the vehicle.
  • Large motorhomes should plan park-and-ride or camper areas outside old towns.
