Campsites and authorised camper stops are the practical base for water, waste, electricity and legal overnight stays on mainland and island routes.
Camper Rules Assistant
Build a country route and get compact allowed/do-not-assume/check cards for overnight rules, LEZ, tolls, documents and winter requirements.
Greece
Greece is excellent for island and shoulder-season motorhome travel, but campers need a careful split between legal road-code parking, camping outside authorised sites, ferry dimensions, toll classes and fire-season restrictions.
Greek road-code parking is not the same as camping. Motorhomes may stop or park where the road code allows, but camping behaviour and overnight stays outside authorised places can be restricted.
Greek motorways use operator-specific toll classes, and ferries price by length, height, trailer and passenger count. Greece does not use a simple national tourist LEZ sticker, but Athens traffic measures, old towns, ports, beaches and fire-season closures can affect motorhomes.
Italy
Italy has clear national road-code rules for autocaravan parking, plus local ZTL, campsite and toll-road rules that matter in historic towns and coastal areas.
Use campsites or aree di sosta camper for overnight stays with services, especially near cities, lakes and beaches.
Italian road rules distinguish permitted parking from camping: a parked autocaravan should rest only on its wheels, keep within its footprint and avoid discharging waste.
Italian motorway tolls are based on vehicle height at the front axle and axle count; many motorhomes fall into class B or higher. Historic centres often use ZTL access-control zones, and some regions also apply environmental traffic limits.
LEZ and cities
Greece does not use a simple national tourist LEZ sticker, but Athens traffic measures, old towns, ports, beaches and fire-season closures can affect motorhomes.
- For Athens, Thessaloniki, island towns and historic centres, plan outside-centre parking or campsite transfers for large vehicles.
- In fire season, forests, tracks and protected areas can close quickly; follow civil-protection and local authority notices.
Historic centres often use ZTL access-control zones, and some regions also apply environmental traffic limits.
- Do not enter a ZTL unless your accommodation, campsite shuttle or local permit explicitly covers the vehicle.
- Large motorhomes should plan park-and-ride or camper areas outside old towns.
