Camping and overnight stays
Camping rules are not uniform across Austria, and forest camping is tightly restricted without the right permissions.
- Use campsites, Stellplaetze or explicitly authorised overnight places rather than assuming roadside parking allows sleeping.
- Local province, municipality, nature-protection and private-land rules can be stricter in lakes, forests and Alpine areas.
Campsites and Alpine services
Campsites and Stellplaetze are the safest base for water, waste, electricity and legal overnight stays on Alpine routes.
- Book ski, lake and summer holiday regions early, and confirm winter water or dump-point availability.
- Check length, approach roads and height before committing to tight valley or old-town sites.
Vignette, section tolls and GO toll
Motorways and expressways are tolled, with light motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes using a vignette and heavier motorhomes using distance-based GO toll.
- For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes maximum technically permissible laden mass, get and configure a GO-Box or approved onboard toll device before using toll roads.
- Section toll roads such as Brenner, Tauern, Karawanken and other Alpine tunnels or passes can add separate charges.
Environmental and city restrictions
Austria's environmental-sticker requirements mainly affect vehicles registered in goods categories, while city parking and access limits still matter for motorhomes.
- If the motorhome is registered as N1, N2 or N3, check whether an Umwelt-Pickerl or regional driving restriction applies.
- Vienna and other cities add short-stay parking, height and access constraints that can be more practical than LEZ checks.
Documents, licence and insurance
Carry licence, registration, insurance and rental paperwork, and match licence category to the registered maximum mass and trailer.
- Keep the GO-Box vehicle declaration and toll data correct for heavy motorhomes.
- Confirm rental and insurance coverage for mountain roads, ferries, snow chains and travel outside Austria.
Winter equipment and Alpine roads
From 1 November to 15 April, winter equipment rules apply in wintry conditions, and Alpine routes can require chains or close quickly.
- Use winter tyres or snow chains as required by conditions and signs, especially on passes and ski-region approaches.
- Check ASFINAG and regional road status before crossing passes in snow, wind or freeze-thaw weather.
