Bulgaria motorhome travel rules
Bulgaria combines Black Sea, mountain and transit-route motorhome travel. Plan e-vignettes or toll checks, use authorised campsites, and treat winter tyres and mountain weather as real route constraints.

Popular motorhome corridors
Overnight parking and protected areas
Do not assume roadside, beach or forest parking allows sleeping in a motorhome. Municipalities, protected areas, resorts and landowners can restrict camping and vehicle access.
- Use campsites, signed camper areas or explicit private permission for overnight stays.
- In national parks, beaches, dunes and forest areas, follow posted rules and avoid camping behaviour unless the place is authorised.
Campsites and service gaps
Campsite and service coverage is strongest on Black Sea, mountain and main transit corridors, but can be sparse inland.
- Plan water, toilet cassette, grey-water and laundry stops before long inland or mountain legs.
- Book Black Sea and mountain-resort sites early in summer and holiday periods.
E-vignette and tolls
Passenger vehicles and light motorhomes use Bulgaria's e-vignette system on the republican road network; heavier goods-category vehicles can fall into toll charging.
- Buy the e-vignette for the correct vehicle category and plate before using vignette roads.
- Check BGTOLL rules carefully for vehicles or combinations over 3.5 tonnes, trailers and non-standard registrations.
City access and resort parking
Bulgaria does not use a broad tourist LEZ sticker, but Sofia, old towns, mountain resorts and coastal municipalities can restrict parking, size and access.
- Plan large motorhomes around outside-centre parking in Sofia, Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo and coastal old towns.
- Watch signs for beach access, height, resident-only parking and seasonal resort restrictions.
Documents, licence and insurance
Carry licence, registration, insurance, rental documents and e-vignette or toll evidence; check categories for heavy motorhomes and trailers.
- Non-EU visitors should check International Driving Permit and insurance-green-card requirements before entering.
- Rental agreements can restrict gravel roads, mountain tracks, ferries and routes into Turkey or non-EU neighbours.
Winter tyres, heat and mountains
From 15 November to 1 March, vehicles must use tyres suitable for winter conditions or tyres with at least 4 mm tread depth.
- Carry chains for Rila, Pirin, Rhodope and Balkan mountain routes when snow or signs require them.
- In summer, plan shade, water and legal overnight stops carefully on Black Sea and inland heat routes.
