Overnight parking and wild camping
A motorhome can use legal parking like other vehicles, but camping behaviour and long stays can be restricted by national, local or protected-area rules.
- Avoid overnighting where municipal signs ban motorhomes, overnight stays or camping.
- Do not block traffic, stay beyond posted limits or turn a parking bay into an outdoor pitch.
Campsites and aires
Use campsites and official aires de camping-car for overnight stops, water, electricity and waste services.
- Coastal and mountain areas can book out in school holidays; reserve ahead in July and August.
- Grey water and toilet cassette disposal should be done only at dedicated service points.
Tolls and road charges
French motorway toll class depends mainly on height, weight and axle count, so tall motorhomes can pay more than cars.
- Motorhomes below 3 metres are usually treated differently from vehicles at or above 3 metres; check the displayed class at toll gates.
- Ferries, tunnels and mountain roads can apply separate vehicle-length and height pricing.
Crit'Air and city restrictions
Crit'Air stickers are required in low-emission zones and during some pollution-control measures, including for foreign vehicles.
- Order the sticker from the official site before entering ZFE-m zones.
- Check each city before arrival because restrictions, hours and exemptions can differ.
Documents and insurance
For motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes, a standard B licence is generally the base category; heavier vehicles can require C1 or equivalent rights.
- Carry licence, registration, insurance proof and rental authorisation if the vehicle is hired.
- Liability insurance must cover travel in France even when the policy was issued abroad.
Mountain winter equipment
In listed mountain areas, winter tyres or approved removable traction devices are required during the winter equipment period.
- The winter equipment period runs from 1 November to 31 March in the affected zones.
- Check departmental signage and weather before crossing Alps, Pyrenees, Massif Central, Jura or Vosges routes.
