Aires, Stellplaetze and campsites
A label helps you search, but does not prove that overnight stays, awnings, tables, disposal or late entry are permitted. Decide from signs, operator rules and the actual facilities.
The format sets an expectation, not a legal guarantee
Aire
In France, the term can mean a service point, a dedicated motorhome parking area or both. Water, disposal and electricity may exist, but overnight permission, maximum stay and outdoor activity come from signs and operator rules.
Wohnmobilstellplatz / Stellplatz
Usually a dedicated motorhome stop with shorter stays and fewer facilities than a campsite. But the German word Stellplatz also means an ordinary parking space, so look for the full description and motorhome signage.
Campsite
Organised accommodation with a pitch, registration and site rules; sanitary facilities, hook-up and longer stays are more common. Services, season, minimum stay and supplements still vary.
Choose for the night, vehicle and required services
- Define the activity: sleeping inside only, or a pitch for awning, furniture, cooking and a longer stay.
- Verify vehicle type and dimensions, trailer, stay limit, arrival hours, booking and payment method.
- Check only required facilities: potable water, grey/black disposal, hook-up amperage, washrooms, laundry and connectivity.
- Separately verify children, pets, accessibility, low-emission zone, tourist tax and quiet hours.
- Keep a fallback: the site may be seasonal, full, closed or unable to accept your length.
For an awning, furniture and several leisure days, a campsite is usually more predictable. For one transit night in a self-contained motorhome, a designated aire or Wohnmobilstellplatz often fits—after checking local rules.
The entrance sign outranks an app listing
- Read restrictions, price, stay limit, exit process and emergency contact before settling.
- Remain within the bay; do not open an awning or place items outside where only parking is permitted.
- Dispose only at marked points and identify the grey-water and toilet facilities before use.
- Keep the receipt and photograph the rules, especially at an automated site.
Paris explicitly separates lawful motorhome parking from prohibited camping activity on the street—a useful verification model for any city, but not a Europe-wide rule.
Official and specialist sources
Before arrival, use the site operator's page and municipal signs; directory listings can become stale.
