Winter route guide

France, Spain and Portugal in winter

A southern destination does not remove winter: French massifs, the Pyrenees and high Iberian roads can require equipment or close, while the Atlantic adds wind, rain and flooding. Re-select the corridor for the date.

Route first

Check every high point, not only overnight cities

  1. Record date, full mass and dimensions, driven axle, tyre markings and vehicle-approved chains.
  2. Split the route into the French approach, Pyrenees crossing or coastal alternative, Spanish plateau and Portuguese segment.
  3. For each segment save the official forecast, road map, elevation, fallback and a safe stop before the difficult section.
  4. Do not use a mountain detour until its restrictions, width, mass and status are verified; a shorter road may close before the motorway.

France

Mountain equipment zones are signed

In signed French mountain communes from 1 November to 31 March, a motorhome needs four qualifying winter tyres or removable anti-skid devices for at least two driven wheels. Since November 2024, only 3PMSF is accepted as the tyre equivalent to chains; M+S without the alpine symbol means chains must also be carried. Check the exact communes and signs on the corridor.

Spain

Road conditions activate restrictions

Spain has no single nationwide seasonal winter-tyre mandate, but DGT can require chains or winter tyres, reduce speed, prohibit overtaking, restrict heavy vehicles or close a road. Follow the exact road's colour level and message signs; fit chains only in a safe place and on the axle specified by the manufacturer.

Portugal

The Atlantic coast does not describe the interior highlands

Portuguese Civil Protection identifies the main snow risk above 1,000 m, including Serra da Estrela and northern mountain systems; ice and closures can occur. IPMA separately warns for snow, low temperature, wind, rain and coastal events. In Serra da Estrela follow the road operator and police rather than a route saved earlier.

Departure morning

Make the go/no-go decision daily

  • Check national weather and road status for all three countries, even if only one is crossed today.
  • Look for snow and ice, wind affecting tall motorhomes, heavy rain/flooding and coastal warnings.
  • Check fuel/charge, water, heating, gas, battery, dry clothing and the ability to wait for improvement.
  • If an authority advises against travel or closes the road, change the day or corridor; equipment does not grant permission to pass.

Weather and road status change quickly; reopen them on the day of travel.
