LPG bottles and adapters in Europe

Europe has no universal bottle or adapter. Identify the system first, then verify fuel, pressure, connection, filling permission and carrier conditions separately.

Critical distinction

An exchange cylinder is not a fixed refillable system

An exchange cylinder goes back to an authorised supplier for a filled replacement. A fixed refillable tank or cylinder is a purpose-designed installation with its own approval, safeguards and external filling point. An adapter is not approval and does not turn the first type into the second.

Calor explicitly warns against filling its portable exchange cylinders from an autogas dispenser. Follow the vessel marking, the system manufacturer's instructions and the individual filling station's rules.

Before travel

Five independent checks

  1. Identify the system from its plate and documents: exchange cylinder or fixed refillable tank/cylinder. If unclear, do not fill it; use a qualified technician.
  2. Verify the required gas and operating pressure for every appliance. A filling connector does not regulate pressure or prove fuel compatibility.
  3. For an exchange system, locate the same supplier network or an installer-approved alternative. Do not assume a foreign bottle matches your regulator.
  4. For a fixed refillable system, verify vessel approval, inspection date, fill limit and forecourt permission. Only then select the specified filling adapter.
  5. Check restraint, ventilation, hoses, regulator and alarms under the instructions. If gas is suspected, isolate it, avoid ignition sources, ventilate and seek specialist help.

Separate decision

Check the carrier for every crossing

A road-legal system can still face separate ferry or tunnel conditions. LeShuttle publishes limits for fixed domestic-service LPG tanks and requires appliances to be off; it does not accept LPG-powered vehicles. Stena Line publishes its own camping-cylinder allowance and requires the valve closed during the sailing. Always recheck the exact sailing.
