Forestry England is initiating a 60-day trial allowing motorhomes and campervans to stay overnight at designated forest sites across England. This initiative, mirroring Scotland's successful Stay the Night scheme, aims to promote responsible overnight parking in natural settings.

The trial will run from July 16 to September 14 and will include seven selected locations: Bedgebury National Pinetum in Kent, Jeskyns Community Woodland in Kent, High Lodge at Thetford Forest in Suffolk, Wendover Woods in Buckinghamshire, Gisburn Forest in Lancashire, and Kielder Castle in Northumberland.

Nicola Thompson, the CEO of rooftop tent brand TentBox, noted that there is a significant shift in travel trends, with rising costs and uncertainties prompting people to seek alternatives that offer more freedom and value.

This trial not only accommodates campervans and motorhomes but also reflects a growing interest in "microadventures"—short and spontaneous trips that require less planning and expenditure. The rise of rooftop tents and compact camper conversions suggests that travelers are increasingly looking for flexible ways to explore the UK without the financial burden of a dedicated leisure vehicle.

If successful, the trial could serve as a precedent, demonstrating that responsible overnight parking can benefit local tourism while allowing visitors to experience England's forests in new and enjoyable ways.
