A recent study by StorageCafe reveals a shift in the RV campground demographic, with younger travelers increasingly dominating the scene. More than 8 million households in the U.S. currently own an RV, while another 16.9 million plan to purchase one, according to data from the RV Industry Association.

This trend is particularly pronounced among Gen Z and millennial households, which are now leading in purchase intent and are often seen traveling with laptops, pets, and remote work setups.

As these tech-savvy campers hit the open road, RV parks are being urged to enhance their offerings. Many are improving Wi-Fi connectivity and amenities to cater to the desire for flexible travel options— including shorter, more frequent trips.

Surprisingly, 87% of travelers are also prioritizing budget-friendly strategies like off-season travel and choosing value-driven destinations that combine luxury stays with affordable RV rentals.

To determine which destinations are best suited for this new wave of RV travelers, StorageCafe evaluated 71 of America’s top RV spots. Each location was scored based on five key categories: coastal and beach escapes, desert and Sun Belt year-round bases, lake and river sites, entertainment hubs, and national park gateways, with a minimum of 10 campsites required for qualification.

The coastal areas emerged as the frontrunners, with Naples, FL, Rockport, TX, and Gulf Shores, AL ranking high in overall scores. Texas proved to be the most accommodating state for RVers, represented by 15 cities across the evaluation categories and offering highly affordable dining options, second only to Alabama.

Custer, South Dakota, was identified as the top national park gateway for RVers, boasting 22 campgrounds with excellent ratings and clean air. Meanwhile, Sun Belt destinations such as Zephyrhills, FL, Mission, TX, and Yuma, AZ, continue to provide winter accommodations for seasonal travelers. The report highlights that RV storage has seen a 9.2% growth nationally over the last decade as ownership booms.
