Toyota Australia has announced a new factory-engineered Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) upgrade for select HiLux models. This upgrade significantly enhances the payload capacity to up to 1525 kilograms, all while preserving the vehicle’s full factory warranty. The upgrade is slated to be available starting August 2026, targeting a range of work-focused HiLux variants.
Retailing from $4000, the GVM upgrade increases payload by 372kg to 435kg, depending on the specific model. This option presents a convenient alternative for tradies and campers who often find themselves near their vehicle's carrying limits, reducing the need for aftermarket solutions.
A major benefit of this upgrade is that it is engineered, fitted, and supported by Toyota, allowing for compatibility with the vehicle's existing safety systems.
John Pappas, Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations at Toyota Australia, stated that this upgrade allows customers to maximize their HiLux’s load-carrying capabilities without sacrificing warranty support. The enhancement also includes longer monotube rear shock absorbers to better handle the increased load and an elevation in ride height by up to 10mm.
Eligible HiLux models for this upgrade include various automatic 4x4 variants such as the HiLux WorkMate Double Cab-Chassis and the HiLux SR Double Cab-Pick Up, all powered by Toyota’s 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine. This factory-introduced option aims to cater to the rising demand for utes in Australia that are heavily accessorized, allowing users to boost their vehicle's capability right from the showroom floor.
Toyota’s factory-backed GVM upgrade is designed to alleviate common payload limitations faced by users who install canopies, drawer systems, and other heavy accessories. The introduction of this option showcases Toyota’s commitment to providing practical solutions for both fleet operators and private owners, thereby enhancing the versatility of the HiLux.
