Beaches, wadis and private permission
Treat camping as a place-specific permission question: use signed camps, recognised beach or desert spots, private permission and local guidance.
- Do not camp in wadis, low ground or flood channels; flash floods can arrive far from visible rain.
- Keep beaches, desert areas and turtle or protected sites low-impact: no waste, no fire damage and no driving where access is restricted.
Services, fuel and mountain-road spacing
Outside Muscat, Salalah and main highways, plan water, fuel, tyre repair, dump options and mobile coverage before long coast, desert or mountain stages.
- Confirm whether a campsite or resort accepts campervans and whether the access road is suitable for your height, length and clearance.
- Large motorhomes should be cautious on Jebel Akhdar, steep village roads, wadis, sand tracks and tight old-town streets.
Temporary admission, customs and route costs
Oman does not depend on a broad road-toll system for ordinary touring routes, but border, customs, insurance and permit details matter for foreign vehicles.

- Budget for border insurance, ferries or shipping if applicable, mountain fuel detours, campsites and paid protected-area experiences.
Cities, mountains and off-road access
There is no broad low-emission sticker for touring motorhomes, but practical access limits come from mountain rules, 4x4-only roads, old streets and protected areas.
- Some mountain roads require four-wheel-drive capability or local confirmation; do not assume a large motorhome can enter every scenic road.
- Use edge parking or taxis for tight souqs, forts and old quarters when height, heat or traffic makes central access difficult.
Licence, insurance and vehicle papers
Carry passport, visa status, driving licence, registration, insurance, rental permission and temporary import or customs papers where applicable.
- Royal Oman Police guidance should be checked for foreign licence and traffic-law requirements before driving.
- Confirm rental cross-border permission before UAE, Saudi or ferry-linked routes, and check whether insurance covers wadis, sand or unsealed roads.
Heat, wadis and cyclone-season weather
Oman's key seasonal risks are extreme heat, flash floods in wadis, mountain fog or rain and tropical weather around the Arabian Sea coast.
- Avoid wadi crossings when rain is forecast upstream, even if the road looks dry at the crossing.
- Plan shade, water and cooling capacity for summer routes, and watch cyclone or khareef-season forecasts for Dhofar and the south coast.
