Romania motorhome travel rules
Romania is increasingly useful for long motorhome routes, but rovinieta payment, mountain weather, winter tyres and protected-area overnight rules need active checks.

Overnight parking and protected areas
Do not assume wild camping is allowed everywhere. Local authorities, national parks, protected areas and landowners can restrict overnight stays and vehicle access.
- Use campsites, guesthouse pitches, signed camper areas or explicit private permission for sleeping in the vehicle.
- In mountain parks and the Danube Delta, follow local conservation rules and do not drive onto tracks or meadows unless access is legal.
Campsites and rural services
Service coverage is uneven, so plan water, toilet cassette, grey-water and secure overnight stops before remote mountain, delta or Transylvania loops.
- Check access roads and maximum length before using rural campsites or mountain guesthouse pitches.
- Book Black Sea, Transfagarasan, Transalpina and holiday-region stays early in summer.
Rovinieta and bridge charges
Romania uses rovinieta road charging for national-road use, with categories and prices depending on vehicle type and maximum authorised mass.
- Buy the rovinieta for the correct vehicle category and number plate before using national roads.
- Danube bridges, ferries and some border crossings can add separate charges based on vehicle size or category.
City access and parking
Romania does not use a broad tourist LEZ sticker, but city centres, old towns, mountain resorts and parking lots can restrict size, timing and access.
- For Bucharest, Brasov, Sibiu and Cluj-Napoca, plan outside-centre parking or campsite transfers for larger vehicles.
- Watch local signs for weight, height, resident-only and historic-centre access limits.
Documents, licence and insurance
Carry licence, registration, insurance, rental permission and rovinieta proof; check B, C1 and trailer categories for heavy motorhomes.
- Non-EU visitors should check whether an International Driving Permit or translation is needed with their licence.
- Rental terms can restrict gravel roads, mountain passes, ferry crossings and travel into Moldova, Ukraine or non-EU neighbours.
Winter tyres and mountain passes
Romania's winter-tyre obligation is condition based: winter tyres are required when driving on roads covered with snow, ice or black ice.
- Carry chains and winter equipment for Carpathian routes, Transfagarasan, Transalpina and rural mountain roads.
- Mountain roads can close seasonally or after storms; check road status before routing a large motorhome over passes.
