What to check

Camping and overnight parking

Use national-park campgrounds, paid campsites, resorts with permission or private hosted stops; do not assume beaches, temples, petrol stations or viewpoints allow overnight camping.

  • National parks can require reservations, entrance fees, campground fees and site-specific vehicle rules.
  • Keep awnings, chairs, cooking and generators out of ordinary parking spaces unless the site clearly allows camping.

What to check

Services and campground booking

Campground quality and motorhome services vary: many sites are tent-focused, so confirm vehicle access, height, power, water and waste handling.

  • Use Department of National Parks reservation tools for park sites where available and contact the park directly for vehicle-size questions.
  • On islands or remote coasts, confirm ferries, LPG/gas handling, water refill and secure overnight parking before arrival.

What to check

Tollways, ferries and entry costs

Bangkok-area tollways, bridges, ferries, park entrance fees, campsite charges and temporary-import guarantees should be part of the budget.

  • Thai Customs can require bond or security for temporary import and may allow extensions only within the maximum permitted stay.
  • Book ferries with exact vehicle length, height and LPG/gas details, especially for islands.

What to check

City access and local restrictions

There is no simple visitor camper sticker that solves city access: traffic density, height limits, parking size, old-town streets and local police rules need route checks.

  • Use edge parking or hosted sites for Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya and historic towns unless a large-vehicle space is confirmed.
  • Protected areas, border provinces and military or royal sites can have local access restrictions.

What to check

Foreign vehicle permit and licence

Foreign vehicles should be handled through the Department of Land Transport Foreign Vehicle Permit process and Thai Customs temporary-import formalities before entry.

  • Thailand.go.th guidance points visitors to valid Thai or international driving licences and, where necessary, temporary Thai licences.
  • Carry passport, licence or IDP, registration book, insurance, owner authorisation, FVP approval and customs documents.

What to check

Monsoon, flooding and heat

Monsoon rain, flash floods, landslides, heat, smoke season in the north and holiday traffic can affect road access and campsite safety.

  • Check weather and park notices before mountain, cave, waterfall, island and border routes during heavy rain.
  • Carry drinking water and shade, and avoid leaving pets or passengers in a parked camper during heat.
