Motorhome overnight rules
Article 50-A restricts motorhome overnight stays and parking in Natura 2000 areas, protected areas and coastal-management zones unless a place is expressly authorised.
- Overnight stay is defined around occupancy between 22:00 and 07:00, so do not assume a beach or viewpoint is safe for sleeping.
- Outside those areas, still follow municipal signs, time limits and bans on camping behaviour.
Campsites and ASA service areas
Use campsites, ASA motorhome areas and authorised stopovers for water, waste, electricity and legal overnight certainty.
- Book Algarve, Lisbon, Porto and surf-coast sites early in peak periods.
- Dump grey water and toilet cassette only at authorised service points.
Motorway tolls and electronic payment
Portuguese motorways can use conventional toll booths or electronic-only tolling, so foreign-registered vehicles should arrange payment before using toll routes.
- Use PortugalTolls, EasyToll, TollCard, Via Verde Visitors or a rental transponder depending on the vehicle and route.
- Vehicle class, height over the front axle, axles and trailer status can affect the toll class.
Low-emission and city access
Portugal does not use a national tourist LEZ sticker, but Lisbon has a low-emission zone and city access rules that can affect older vehicles.
- Check Lisbon ZER requirements before driving an older light or heavy motorhome into central areas.
- Historic centres, beach towns and car parks may add height, width and overnight parking limits.
Documents, licence and insurance
Carry licence, registration, insurance and rental permission; check licence category and toll-device responsibility before departure.
- Make sure rental billing covers both electronic-only and conventional tolls, including delayed charges.
- For heavy or long vehicles, confirm ferry, campsite and old-town access limits in advance.
Heat, wildfire and coastal notes
Summer heat, wildfire risk, coastal wind and protected-area restrictions are the key seasonal motorhome constraints.
- Check wildfire alerts, road closures and park restrictions before remote inland or forest routes.
- Plan water, shade and legal overnight stops carefully in the Algarve and along exposed Atlantic coast sections.
