Sweden motorhome travel rules
Sweden is welcoming for motorhome routes, but the right of public access is not a motor-vehicle right. Plan legal parking or campsites, check winter tyres, congestion charges, bridge tolls and municipal environmental zones.

Right of public access and motorhomes
Driving and parking off-road are not covered by the right of public access, and motorhomes are treated as more intrusive than a small tent.
- Do not drive onto beaches, meadows, forest ground, lawns or other natural ground unless motor traffic is clearly allowed.
- Rest areas often allow up to 24 hours on weekdays and longer over weekends, unless signs or local rules say otherwise.
Campsites, stallplatser and services
Use campsites and stallplatser for reliable overnight stays, water, electricity and waste disposal, especially near cities, coast and national parks.
- Confirm whether a marked parking place permits sleeping or only daytime parking.
- Plan service intervals in northern Sweden and archipelago regions because distances and seasons stretch quickly.
Congestion tax and bridge tolls
Sweden uses camera-based congestion tax and infrastructure charges, with no vignette or onboard unit needed for ordinary tourist driving.
- Congestion tax applies in Stockholm and Gothenburg to Swedish and foreign-registered vehicles.
- Bridge charges apply on Motala, Sundsvall and Skurubron, and ferries can price by length and height.
Environmental zones
Municipal environmental zones can restrict heavy vehicles and, in newer zone classes, light vehicles by Euro class or fuel type.
- Check the municipality and Transportstyrelsen zone class before entering a city centre with an older diesel or heavy motorhome.
- City access issues can combine with parking height, width and winter street rules.
Documents, licence and insurance
Carry licence, registration, insurance and rental authorisation; check B, C1 and trailer categories against the registered weights.
- Rental contracts may restrict gravel roads, winter travel, ferries and travel into neighbouring countries.
- Foreign vehicles remain subject to Swedish road, tax and winter-equipment rules while in Sweden.
Winter tyres and northern routes
Winter tyre rules are strict and depend on vehicle weight, date and road conditions, with separate rules for studded tyres.
- From 1 December to 31 March, light campers up to 3.5 tonnes need winter tyres or equivalent equipment when roads are wintry.
- For heavier vehicles, winter-tyre periods and tread-depth requirements are stricter; check the vehicle class before a winter route.
