This summer, nearly 1.3 million Norwegians are set to travel more within Norway, according to a nationwide survey by Respons Analyse for Fremtind. The survey indicates that 65% of Norwegians feel that global unrest is influencing their travel plans, with 44% planning to vacation domestically as a result.
The surge in domestic tourism may lead to increased traffic on popular holiday routes, raising concerns over the potential for serious accidents, as noted by Fremtind in their press release. The survey was conducted in week 19 of 2026 with 1,047 respondents providing their insights.
In addition to the domestic increase, trends show a rise in international tourists choosing Norway this summer, attributed to higher temperatures in southern Europe. This influx is likely to result in more vehicles on Norwegian roads, which could lead to congestion and more drivers navigating unfamiliar terrain.
Therese Hofstad-Nielsen, a safety advocate at Fremtind, emphasizes the importance of allowing extra travel time and being considerate of other road users, particularly during the peak summer season, which is already prone to serious traffic incidents. So far this year, 52 fatalities have been reported on the roads.
To mitigate risks, the police have announced that they will focus enforcement efforts on the most dangerous routes. Hofstad-Nielsen cautions against impatience on the road, noting that speeding and risky overtaking can lead to serious situations. It’s crucial to prioritize safe travel over arriving first.
