Billings KOA Holiday has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive camping by renewing its Certified Autism Center designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This initiative is aimed at creating a welcoming environment for autistic and sensory-sensitive guests, supported by expanded staff training and accessibility-focused amenities.
The renewal of the certification mandates that at least 80% of guest-facing staff complete updated training that enhances their understanding and capability to assist autistic individuals and their families. The program emphasizes specialized education dedicated to promoting accessibility and inclusion within the camping experience.
Rakeem Behlin-Dorsey, general manager of Billings KOA Holiday, expressed pride in the renewed certification, highlighting the campground’s dedication to accommodating guests with varying sensory needs. He stated, "We believe camping is fun and for everyone, and creating spaces where everyone feels welcomed is an important part of that commitment."
The campground has introduced a Sensory Safe Cabin, which offers a variety of sensory-friendly activities and features, including sand play and fidget tools, designed to provide a calming environment for guests seeking a respite from sensory overload. Testimonials from families, such as one shared by Dax's family, emphasize the positive impact of these accommodations on their travel experience.
Myron Pincomb, board chairman of IBCCES, affirmed that the recertification showcases the campground’s commitment to fostering inclusive travel experiences. He noted that Billings KOA Holiday serves as a significant example for the hospitality and tourism sectors to follow in making outdoor travel and camping more inclusive for all.
The campground is also included in the IBCCES Accessibility App, a resource that helps users find certified destinations and sensory-friendly spaces.
