Volkswagen has introduced the ID. California Cruise, marking its entry into the electric camper van segment with the first fully electric model in the California series. Built on the ID. Buzz Pro platform, this new camper will be available in both short and long wheelbase versions, specifically for European consumers.
The ID. California Cruise features a 2-meter-long bed platform with a folding mattress located above the rear seats. Additional features include ventilation inserts for the front windows, blackout blinds for all windows, and unique "California" and "Cruise" exterior badging. This design aims to enhance user comfort and convenience while camping.
To support overnight camping experiences, the vehicle is equipped with a "California mode" that manages interior climate control, device charging, and lighting. It also includes a vehicle-to-load function capable of delivering a peak output of 3.6 kilowatts, allowing users to power small appliances through a "PowerSocket" adapter at the charge port.
The package also provides an exterior camping table and chairs, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027.
The ID. California Cruise does not include traditional camper amenities such as pop-top roofs or built-in kitchens, similar to those found in other California models.
However, Volkswagen will also launch the ID. Buzz Tourer for the United States market, which is set to share many features with its European counterpart.
Scheduled for release in 2027, the U.S. model includes a fold-out mattress, window blinds, and various adaptations to facilitate overnight stays.
The growing presence of electric camper vans reflects a shift toward eco-conscious travel and indicates a rising demand for zero-emission recreational vehicles. This trend presents opportunities for campground operators to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure and adapt their facilities to cater to these innovative camping setups.
